My "battle scars"

I know I've already described what I look like post-surgery but, as the saying goes, the picture is worth a whole lot more. Below are a few snapshots of my various and sundry "battle scars" from going down a round with Iggy.

The inside of my right arm. The docs decided this was either from the IV or how I was positioned during surgery.

This little guy my mom found on my left ear after surgery. (We also found a matching one on my tailbone.) Again, the docs figured it was because  I was lying on it for so long.

The incision on my right hip from the fat graft measuring 2 inches

And the Big Kahuna itself, also measuring 2 inches wide and running from forehead to nape

Soo...hair styling ideas anyone? :)

  1. WoW Your incision looks great!! You can rock the Rhihanna hairstyle now (I think she has or had her head shaved on one side), lol. Still, it looks good. I just had my hair highlighted and cut. Not just to impress the medical team (lol) but my daughters wedding is July 1st I was unsure how long it would be before I could get it done.

Anyhoo, back to you, Manders--you did great. Thank you and your dad for keeping us updated throughout your sugery/recovery and posting the pics. Amazing to say the least.

    1. No problem! And yeah, you're right, Rihanna did have something similar. I'll have to do a little research online and see how she rocked it. lol

  2. Your hair looks cool like that, Manders. You could start a new trend! If you don't like the asymmetrical look, you could shave the other side.

I'm thinking of going asymmetrical after my surgery this summer, growing it out on the AN side, in the event that I need to conceal a BAHA.

Thanks for the photos. I hope your are feeling a bit better today and that you continue to steadily improve.

    2. Thanks, Liz! Can't wait to see your new 'do, too. :o) Hmm...perhaps we should start a thread for post-surgery hairstyle ideas? We could find and post pics, etc. This could get really interesting and I'm sure we could wind up with some really creative, cute ideas! Not sure yet what I'm going to do with my hair. I think I'll probably leave it as is for the summer and let it grow out a little and then cut it all short before the fall.

    1. Some sort of blister I think from lying on it in surgery for 12 hours. They wound care nurse wasn't 100% sure what it was but I'm sure it'll fade soon.

  5. Manders,

I am interested in learning more about the scarf. What type of material was it? Did it make contact with your incision or did you have a bandage over the incision underneath of the scarf? I am definately gonna take a scarf, just not sure what kind. I like the idea of not freaking out any children or therapy pets. LOL.

Thanks so much for the pics and posts. Just knowing that someone else has endured this journey gives me confidence that I can do it too.

    1. My scarf is a long 100% polyester rectangle so its very smooth and satin-y and long enough to be tied. (No square neck kerchiefs!) I would suggest one with a similar texture as you don't want it to catch on your hair or incision. You'll probably want to start wearing your scarf once they take bandage off so, no, there won't be anything between the incision and your scarf. Pink is my favorite color so that's the color I got and just looking at it made me happy. :)

I know you'll do just smashingly! I ended up encountering a lot more along the way than I had anticipated and it was alright in the end. Having your faith and a strong support system will certainly see you through anything! :)

    2. Thanks! Soft and silky is what I'll look for.

I know I am not going it alone. Gods fingerprints are everywhere -- On my heart, my brain and those surgeons hands. I am trusting He'll see me through and I am so thankful for a loving husband and family, and sooo many people praying for me. Today, Kixit, I am praying for you. You can do this.

  6. I just saw Dr Woodson Yesterday, I have been having ear issues. I was shocked to find out I have Cholesteatoma in my right ear. It is basically a cyst/tumor from my constant ear infections over the years.. I am absolutley terrified. Her eyes are piercing blue btw ( I have been reading your blog lol) . I had a anxiety attack and basically ran out of the office ( I to went by myself) all I wanted to do was to be alone so I could just freak out.. Well that was yesterday - Today I have been doing my research about the disease - then I decided to do some research on Dr Woodson which is how I got to you. Thank God I found your page. I am so glad she was able to help you.
